Development of high softening point oilfield drilling fluid treatment agent asphalt

As a bituminous product with a softening point above 120°C as a treatment agent for oilfield drilling fluids, it has been successfully developed by the Sinopec Fushun Petrochemical Research Institute. The bitumen has the characteristics of high softening point and low temperature sensitivity, meets the deep drilling requirements, and has the same performance as similar imported products, and provides technical support for oil field drilling operations.


The asphalt product has completed the industrial scale-up test in April of this year. At present, high-softening-point asphalt of 140°C to 160°C has been produced. The product can be used under deep drilling and ultra-deep well conditions and will soon undergo industrial trials at oilfield companies.


As a drilling fluid treatment agent, bitumen products have good anti-sloughing, lubrication, reduced fluid loss, and high stability. In China, bitumen drilling fluid treatment agents mainly use natural asphalt and sulfonated asphalt. The softening point of the product is mostly below 120°C, so the ability to resist high temperature is poor. It can only be used as an ordinary drilling fluid treatment agent and cannot meet the requirements of deep drilling.


In order to develop a high-softening-point drilling fluid treatment agent with high-temperature resistance, high-softening point asphalt products, Fushun Petrochemical Institute first developed a high-softening-point asphalt at a temperature higher than 120°C in the laboratory. After trials of related oilfield drilling departments, the product has good plugging and high temperature drop filtration effect and is suitable for drilling operations under high temperature conditions. Later, based on the optimization of laboratory research results, the hospital developed high-softening point asphalts for drilling fluids that have good fluid loss properties under high temperature conditions and have little effect on the rheological properties of drilling fluids, and by selecting appropriate catalysts, The reaction temperature is reduced, the reaction time is shortened, and the product performance is more excellent.
